Block 03 · Come On Home

Come on home

Owen's grandmother pieced her first quilt on this farm in 1961, from her mother's old dresses and a sack of feed-bag cotton. It still lies on the bed in the front room.

We'd like to add a new block to it, with all of you around us. Come for the weekend: cider on Friday, vows under the big maple on Saturday, and pancakes on the porch before you go.

Block 04 · The Memory Blocks

Pieced together

Every block in a quilt has a name. Here are ours.

  1. Schoolhouse · 2016

    Room 114

A Tuesday-night pottery class in Burlington. Owen's bowl collapsed. Clara's didn't. He asked her how.

  2. Log Cabin · 2019

    The yellow apartment

Three rooms above a bakery on Church Street, a radiator that clanked all winter, and bread every morning.

  3. Flying Geese · 2021

    Every back road

Four summers of maps and a station wagon: Nova Scotia, the Gaspé, and every covered bridge in Vermont.

  4. Ohio Star · 2026

    Under the orchard

First snow, a thermos of cider, and a ring hidden in a mitten. She said yes before he'd finished.

Rich colours welcome.

Think of the trees in October: rust, mustard, plum, deep green. Suits and dresses, knits and corduroy are all at home here.

From the scrap basket

  • Rust
  • Mustard
  • Sage
